The IGP Saint Guilhem-le-Désert in a few words
The only geographical indication bearing the name of a Village, this very young indication created in 2011 is supported by 56 winegrowers.
In the heart of the Occitanie region, north of Montpellier, a vast natural area opens up where scrubland and forest predominate up to the foot of the Larzac and the Cévennes. This territory, crossed by the upper Hérault valley, is rich in remarkable landscapes, where Mediterranean hills and limestone rocky cliffs follow one another.
With Saint Guilhem le Désert, a jewel of Romanesque art, whose abbey is listed as a world heritage site, a stopover on the road to Santiago de Compostela. But also the Montferrand castle, perched on its dizzying rocky ridge, and the Aniane abbey, founded by Saint Benoit in the 8th century.
Vines, wine and olive trees are also important in this area. The vines, nestled in the scrubland, are most often planted on the few highest cultivable plots of land, which gives the wines produced an astonishing freshness.
